Range and speed

The ES4 is a powerful electric scooter. The motor has a peak power of 800 watts, which makes it one of the more impressive scooters out there. At regular output, we’re looking at 300 watts (which is 50 more than the Xiaomi Mi Scooter for instance). It also has two batteries – an internal one and an external one. That extra external battery is what gives it a max range of 28 miles. If your commute is long, you’ll need that battery power.

If you don’t need it, you can disconnect the external battery and just rely on the internal one. As for speed, the ES4 is an upgrade on Segway’s older ES2 and ES3 models. The ES4 can get up to 19 mph. To save on power, there’s a speed limit mode, as well as a standard and sports mode. If you need to get up hills on your commute, the ES4’s slope grade is 15-degrees.

Ninebot ES4Segway has been making personal transportation vehicles for a long time, so it has its construction down. There’s a mesh pattern on the deck for better grip, and the handlebar is comfortable, too.

The scooter folds up quickly, so you can take it on a bus or train if necessary, though the ES4 is a bit heavy at 31 pounds. That’s heavier than previous ES models. In terms of how much weight the scooter can hold, the specs say 220 pounds. For color options, you can choose dark gray or silver.

What about the airless wheels? The front is 8-inches, and the back is 7.5 inches. You brake the rear tire mechanically, while the front tire uses an electrical brake located on the handlebar. Being able to brake with both tires helps with stability.

Control Panel & Bluetooth

Ninebot ES4 LED DisplayTo access important info like your speed, riding mode, and battery life, just take a look at the ES4’s LED screen. Segway also has a Bluetooth phone app for this scooter. It lets you customize the color of your rear and sidelights, and turn the headlight on and off.

You can also use an anti-theft function, alarm, and conduct vehicle diagnostics. There’s also a cruise control option, which limits your speed to a breezy 12 mph. This is a great way to save on battery without losing significant speed.

Segway KickScooter ES4 WheelsSafety with electric scooters is paramount. Thankfully, the ES4 Kickscooter is UL 2272 certified,  which is probably the most essential safety feature to look for with scooters. This certification means the lithium battery system has gone through rigorous tests, so with proper care, the scooter won’t explode.

You can further assure your safety by treating the battery well and never overcharging it, keeping the scooter in a cool, dry place, and only using the official charger.

The scooter’s lighting is also worth checking out, and Segway was wise to keep the rear light it added with the ES3. You’ll be seen from behind, which is just as important on the road as being seen from the front.

For riding safety, there are shock-absorbent materials, so you aren’t jarred as hard if you hit something.

Traction isn’t great on terrain other than city pavement. The ES4 wasn’t built for grass, dirt, or sand, and it really shows. Even bumpier roads and pavement can be a bit rough, so the shock absorbing could be better on this unit.

The other downside is the price. It’s relatively expensive at around $800. It looks like you’re basically paying for the range and brand name because scooters with other comparable features are more affordable.

Who should buy the Ninebot ES4 KickScooter?

If you want a reliable brand with history and an electric scooter with a really good range, the Segway Ninebot ES4 is one to consider.

Commuters in the city who want to avoid a bus or train will get the most out of this model. The long range makes it more potent than a typical “last mile” scooter.

Final verdict

Segway Ninebot KickScooter ES4We’re giving the Segway Ninebot Kickscooter ES4 a 3.75 out of 5 stars. It has a really great range and power, so it’s perfect for commuters who want to ride the scooter as much as possible. The external battery was a brilliant idea.

However, the scooter’s tires aren’t the best. They can’t handle anything rougher than smooth city pavement, and they haven’t been upgraded at all since the ES3.

Another reason for the score is the price, which could be prohibitive for a lot of people, and there are other similar, more affordable scooter options out there.

If the ES4 is in your budget, however, you’re getting a long-lasting, well-built e-scooter from a reliable brand.
